Welcome to First Grade
Dear Parents,
Welcome to First Grade! It is my sincere wish to make this school year a wonderful learning experience for your child. I am taking this opportunity to tell you about what we will be doing in class this school year. I hope to answer a few of the questions you may have at this time. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Mrs. Sharleen Myers. This is the beginning of my tewlfth year here at Harris Elementary. My husband and I are proud parents of THREE boys.
Supplies: The school supplies your child with all the necessary materials. Please provide a backpack for your child. A standard size backpack is preferable.

Labels: Please label all of your child’s belongings (e.g. jackets, backpacks, lunch boxes). Make sure that your child writes their name on any papers/homework packets that they will be turning in to me.
Absences: Please phone the office on the day your child is absent. The absentee phone number is 631-5313. If you must take your child out of class early for a doctor or dentist appointment, please check in with the office before coming to the classroom. I have included the class schedule. Our core subjects are done before lunch.
Newsletter and Web page: There will be occasional classroom newsletters to fill you in on what is happening in our class. Our webpage is updated at least once a month.
Homework: Homework packets will be sent home on Mondays and returned on Fridays. The homework will be sent in a folder. Please make sure that it is returned inside the folder. I have included the first grade high frequency word list and a hundred chart for reference. The homework should not take more then 20 minutes a day. In addition to the homework your child must read 20 minutes a day. Please write the titles of the books on the reading log. I collect these logs and turn them in to our Reading Specialist.
Conduct Folder:
On Fridays your child will be taking home their conduct folder. Please review, sign, and return the folder. It is very important that this is returned on time. For more information please refer to the conduct policy. Occasionally your child might have a paper that they must correct and return on Monday.
Reading: Our language arts program is “Houghton Mifflin”. This is a very comprehensive program in which I will be emphasizing phonics, fluency, comprehension, and much more. For more specific information please refer to the California content standard for language arts.
Writing: In writing, I will be stressing sentence structure, capitalization and basic punctuation skills. We will also study the complete writing process. For more specific information please refer to the California content standard for language arts.
Spelling: The children will learn basic spelling rules and words to increase their vocabulary. Spelling tests will not begin until the end of September. For more specific information please refer to the California content standard for language arts.
Math: Math will cover basic addition and subtraction. We will learn time and apply our math skills to counting money. Your child will learn place values from 0 to 99 and how to read and print numbers from 10 to 100. We will be learning to count by 10s, 5s, and 2s. For more specific information please refer to the California content standard for mathematics.
Science, Social Studies, Arts, Music, and PE: These topics will be integrated into our daily curriculum.
Please feel free to contact me if you should have any further questions. I can be reached at 631-5310 or myerss@bcsd.com.
This is going to be a GREAT year!
